Feed Naturally - save £s

dog

With increases in raw ingredient/manufacturing and transport costs during the recent credit crunch there has been a noticeable increase in the price of pet food - and as dogs eat a lot more (on average) than cats, it's the dog owner that is currently suffering.

The main losers seem to be the companies that use a lot of rice in their recipes, though no doubt even the cheap and cheeerful diets based on wheat are feeling the pinch. One company, Burns has switched to corn for some of its recipes, which is something it never would have done some years ago - presumably corn is cheaper than rice.

A quick look at current prices (June 2009) shows popular brands of 'natural' complete food for adult dogs to be anything between £29 to £44 for a 15kg bag.

If you are currently paying over £40 for a 15kg bag of 'natural' dog food, and by that we mean one not containing artificial preservatives, colours or flavourings and based around a single source of protein then can we suggest that you look at what's around these days - there's a lot more choice than there used to be.

At one time companies such as Arden Grange, Burns or James Wellbeloved seemed to have cornered the market for natural foods. Now you can pay much less and get a really good deal.

So check out Pet Supermarket and Pets at Homewebsites for information and what seem to be good prices - they have the biggest choices around. We would single out the Pets at Homeown brand food as excellent, having fed it ourselves, but you might also want to check out smaller complanies such as Whites Premium who are also very competitive on quality and price (discounted at Pet Pantry)
